Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania director Peyton Reed offers up new details on Bill Murray's debut MCU role: '[He] plays a character from Janet van Dyne's past. It’s a crucial role.'

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania director Peyton Reed reveals more information regarding Bill Murray's mysterious new character. After Black Panther: Wakanda Forever marked the conclusion to Phase 4 of the MCU, Reed's upcoming film will kick off Phase 5. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is set to catapult Scott Lang , Hope , Cassie , Hank , and Janet into the quantum realm.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Murray revealed earlier this year that his character is a villain in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, but now, in a recent interview with EW, Reed spills further details on exactly who the veteran actor will be playing. While stopping short of revealing Murray's character's name, the director reveals that he will play an important role in terms of Janet's past and the movie's central themes.

"Bill Murray plays a character from Janet van Dyne's past. It’s a crucial role. A big theme in this movie is the things that parents and kids don't say to each other, the secrets that they keep in families. In the last movie, when Hank and Hope rescue Janet, Evangeline Lilly's character had this idea of: Oh, I'm going to be reunited with my mom, this is going to be great, we're going to talk about everything.

Many fans have also pointed out that, since Kang is slated to be the villain in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and possibly even Avengers: Secret Wars, he is likely significantly stronger than Ant-Man. By including a secondary antagonist of some sort, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania could avoid too many direct showdowns between Rudd's hero and Majors' villain, thereby not stretching believability in terms of Scott's ability to take on a Thanos-level threat all by himself.

Some have theorized that Murray is playing Krylar, a relatively minor scientist character from the Marvel comics, but neither Reed's comment nor the trailer for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania confirms or denies this. While many questions remain about Murray's role in the film, it will evidently be interesting to see the comedic actor potentially take on more of an antagonistic role this time around.
