Jack Champion breaks down Spider's struggle with identity in AvatarTheWayofWater during an exclusive interview: 'He feels like one of the [Na'vi]. But, obviously, at the end of the day, he's an alien.' 😔

Jack Champion explains his character's struggles with identity and the inner turmoil he faces in Avatar: The Way of Water. Champion plays Miles "Spider" Socorro, a human who grew up on Pandora among the Na'vi after being orphaned during the war in Avatar. Spider is close with the Sully family, having grown up with them and the Na'vi culture, but he is an alien to Pandora, which could cause conflict when the humans return to Pandora.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Unlike Jake Sully, who became a Na'vi at the end of Avatar, Spider has grown up within the Na'vi culture, but has always been an outsider to a degree. The return of humans will likely complicate his questions about his identity, compounding his struggle to find his place between humans and Na'vi. In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Champion breaks down Spider's lifelong struggle with identity.

Jack Champion: I play Spider. He was a human, born and raised on Pandora, but I think at his core, he feels conflicted that he is a human. He feels so much like a Na'vi and a part of the culture and the people, and he feels like one of the people. But obviously at the end of the day, he's an alien. So, it's really cool to play a character with such deep inner conflict.

While Spider may initially hate that humans have returned to Pandora, especially after hearing about the destruction they wrought, this could change, especially if the Sully family leaves him behind. Spider's struggle will be especially interesting because it could mirror Jake's own arc in Avatar. While Spider may not fully fit in with the Na'vi, he will likely be an alien to the humans as well, being more similar to the inhabitants of Pandora.

Spider may have to face a feeling of never truly belonging with the humans or Na'vi forever searching for a family. He may find it in the Sully family, but he could also find it among the returning humans, especially if any of them are biologically related to him. How Spider contends with this question of identity and who he decides to stand by will be the true test of his character in Avatar: The Way of Water.
