Fans gather outside a South Korean military facility as Jin, the oldest member of K-Pop group BTS, arrives to begin his mandatory military duty. South Korea requires all men aged 18-28 to serve in the military, though Jin, 30, had his service delayed.

Jin, 30, is heading to the military after delaying conscription two years beyond the maximum age limit. This was possible due to a change of law designed to buy time for pop artists to carry on with their careers.

BTS attends a press conference for BTS's new digital single 'Butter' at Olympic Hall, May 21, 2021 in Seoul, South Korea.Mandatory conscription has always been a challenge for male Korean national K-pop stars, as the responsibility usually falls upon them at the height of their sometimes sweeping careers. Widely famous K-pop groups like EXO and SuperM already had to send some of their members to the military, which ended up in an inevitable halt to those groups' performances.

A second-generation K-pop boy band, Super Junior made a rare successful comeback as a whole team, and is now on a world tour. It took nearly 10 years for all members to finish military duties because of the members' age differences. In the meantime, the members nurtured talent in MC, solo performance and acting to stay in touch with the public.

There has been a widely divided public debate whether pop artists like BTS should also be given the same military exception. "South Korea is already short of soldiers to defend this country While North Korea is constantly threatening with missiles, nuclear tests, and artillery," Lawmaker Han told ABC News.

Members of the public have expressed mixed feelings, but many seemed to agree on the importance of reaching a consensus about mandatory service.

BTS star Jin begins South Korea army duty amid tight security, cheering fansSouth Korea's military got a new recruit on Tuesday: Jin, the oldest member of K-pop phenomenon BTS, began 18 months of mandatory national service, complete with newly shaven head. I'm guessing he'll be okay. There's no active conflict. The most action he'll see are exercises. He's in good shape and great at choreography so he might excel at this. , 12 years ago I unfollowed CNN for their 'breaking' Britney Spears news, and now your news feed is losing any respect. How this shit is this relevant in this world to be shared in the genuine news stream? It depends where Jin intends to pursue military conscription. Conscripts serve for 18 months in the army and the marines, 20 months in the navy, and 21 months in the air force. The first few weeks of service are usually spent at a basic training camp before soldiers are deployed.

BTS star Jin begins military service in South KoreaThe K-pop megastar reported to a boot camp Tuesday near the country’s border with its nuclear-armed neighbor, North Korea. Newsworthy because...? Sounds like code 4 he was out of control...& Needs to chill out get some discipline 🤔 Good for South Korea! I support the concept of some kind of mandatory service in the USA at 18, i.e., military, Peace Corps, (or religious equivalent), trade school where urban survival skills are taught, i.e., changing a light bulb or the filter in your HVAC unit unassisted.
