Jin, the oldest member of K-pop supergroup BTS, began his 18 months of mandatory military service at a frontline South Korean boot camp Tuesday, as fans gathered near the base to say goodbye to their star.

In this photo provided by Weverse, Jin of K-pop band BTS shows off freshly shaved hair on the K-pop social media platform Weverse, which was uploaded Sunday, Dec. 11, 2022, ahead of his upcoming military conscription. Jin, the oldest member of K-pop supergroup BTS, was set to enter a frontline South Korean boot camp Tuesday to start his 18 months of mandatory military service, as fans gathered near the base to say goodbye to their star.

Jin, who turned 30 earlier this month, entered the boot camp at Yeoncheon, a town near the tense border with North Korea, for five weeks of basic military training together with other new conscript soldiers, the Defense Ministry said. After the training involving rifle shooting, grenade throwing and marching practices, he and other conscripts would be assigned to army units across the country.

“Actually it’s complicated. I wanna be sad. I wanna be happy for him,” said Angelina from Indonesia."Mixed feelings. He has to serve his country.” Angelina, like many Indonesians, uses only one name. By law, all able-bodied South Korean men must serve in the military for 18-21 months under a conscription system established to deal with threats from North Korea. But the law gives special exemptions to athletes, classical and traditional musicians, and ballet and other dancers if they have won top prizes in certain competitions and enhance national prestige. K-pop stars and other entertainers aren’t given such benefits even if they gain worldwide fame and win big international awards.

Chun In-bum, a retired lieutenant general who commanded South Korea’s special forces, said the government must move to repeal any exemptions as the military’s shrinking recruitment pool is “a very serious” problem. He called a debate over BTS’s military service “unnecessary” as it wasn’t raised by BTS members, who have shown willingness in carrying out their duties.

BTS star Jin begins South Korea army duty amid tight security, cheering fansSouth Korea's military got a new recruit on Tuesday: Jin, the oldest member of K-pop phenomenon BTS, began 18 months of mandatory national service, complete with newly shaven head. I'm guessing he'll be okay. There's no active conflict. The most action he'll see are exercises. He's in good shape and great at choreography so he might excel at this. , 12 years ago I unfollowed CNN for their 'breaking' Britney Spears news, and now your news feed is losing any respect. How this shit is this relevant in this world to be shared in the genuine news stream? It depends where Jin intends to pursue military conscription. Conscripts serve for 18 months in the army and the marines, 20 months in the navy, and 21 months in the air force. The first few weeks of service are usually spent at a basic training camp before soldiers are deployed.

BTS star Jin begins military service in South KoreaThe K-pop megastar reported to a boot camp Tuesday near the country’s border with its nuclear-armed neighbor, North Korea. Newsworthy because...? Sounds like code 4 he was out of control...& Needs to chill out get some discipline 🤔 Good for South Korea! I support the concept of some kind of mandatory service in the USA at 18, i.e., military, Peace Corps, (or religious equivalent), trade school where urban survival skills are taught, i.e., changing a light bulb or the filter in your HVAC unit unassisted.
