Baghdaddy, Royal Court, review: Jasmine Naziha Jones is exquisite in this story of fathers and daughters
Against the backdrop of an imposing flight of stone steps redolent of Greek tragedy, Dad and eight-year-old Darlee wear party hats as they celebrate her birthday at McDonald’s. “In Iraq”: Dad speaks the first words of the play and it is immediately apparent that Darlee has heard these familiar stories of the land of her father’s birth so often that she can join in the telling with him.
This trio, clowning at times, sharp and spiteful at others like Cinderella’s wicked stepmother and stepsisters, add little and take away much. Jones’s powerful material would have been far better told straight rather than with all this unnecessary larking about, as ominous news of Operation Desert Storm reaches Dad and Darlee in their English living room.
