An 18-year-old woman has died after being infected with meningococcal disease, the third death due to the disease in NSW this year alone. 7NEWS

So far in 2022 there have been 29 cases of the rare but potentially fatal disease recorded in the state, with a “slight” increase in recent weeks.The disease can be fatal within hours if untreated, with children aged under five and between 15 and 25 years of age at greatest risk of contracting it.

“I urge everyone not to discount symptoms when they appear or assume it may be just a mild infection.The best defence “If symptoms rapidly worsen, or if your child is very unwell, call Triple Zero or go straight to your nearest emergency department,” McAnulty said.
