“I hope my actions didn’t distract from the film’s message, Peter’s story and just how much impact he had on the world,' McFarland wrote in an Instagram post on Sunday.

The photograph shows a man named Peter, who escaped enslavement, with scars on his back from being repeatedly whipped. The photo has been known both as “Whipped Peter” and “The Scourged Back.”

“After uncovering Peter’s origin story with help from diligent historians, I spent the last few years working with thecreative time in order to bring his story to life so worldwide audiences would have an opportunity to appreciate his heroism. I hope my actions don’t distract from the film’s message, Peter’s story and just how much impact he had on the world,” McFarland went on to say in the post.

“Throughout the research and development of Emancipation, I discovered photographs of overlooked and historically important individuals whose stories also needed to be told. One photograph, of Martin Delaney, is on loan to the National Portrait Gallery and is currently on exhibit. My plan was always to donate the photographs to the appropriate institution, in consultation with the community, and I believe there is no better time to begin that process than now.

The film is race bait to foment an easing of “hate whitey” attitudes and actions of bad folks.

He still calling him by the name the slavers gave him Peter. This man refuses to call him by his given name, Gordon. The disrespect is disgusting!

OMG - people are out of control. The man made a movie and honored a man's life. Bringing his picture is soooo egregious that he needs to apologize? hey WOKE FOLK... go back to sleep. please.

McFarland said that in the hopes Will Smith wouldn't slap him.

ReelTalker That was fucking weird and it was good he was put in the Spot

Why ? DON T stop promoting the film and showing what that man went through...its the TRUTH..💋💕

I bet

I suppose it would depend on the photo content.

Why is that a bad thing? Lol wtf

I'm not sure it's what the distributors wanted who want to sell this as a Will Smith led Hollywood movie, not a dour, dark portrait of historical horror, which simply doesn't get a big audience.

Nobody's watching anyway

Don’t apologize, donate it to the NMAAHC

No apologies are necessary. JoeyMcFarland. Amongst others, many wealthy Black celebrities ~ realchriswebber, a collector could’ve purchased them. It is an iconoclastic photo reflective of the 🇺🇸 story. I appreciate it being preserved. AntoineFuqua Emancipation willsmith

Bizarro!! Why! It was this man he based the movie on. A picture of honor
