a fortnight ago, Maryana Golovko’s parents were among thousands of families left without power, water and heating for 28 hours as temperatures dropped below zero degrees celsius.

Ukrainian soprano Maryana Golovko, who collaborated with Sydney-based musicians Paul Beard and Dan Fallon on their fundraising project, Blue Skies for Ukraine.“Young people in Kyiv are ... making music, they’re trying to party. Even a war cannot stop them.”“We have some regions in Ukraine where it’s hell,” Golovko says. “I feel that my personal responsibility now is to make my art and try to help these people who are suffering from this unbelievable, very bad war.

Golovko contributed lyrics and vocals in both English and Ukrainian, while Shchedryk Kyiv Children’s Choir created a haunting piece inspired by Fallon and Beard’s original song.The team, a melting pot of musicians spanning the genres of blues, opera and classical music, has had to navigate different time zones, unreliable electricity grids and the constant threat of Russian air attacks to create music in a war zone.
