Gus Unger-Hamilton of alt-J performs as part of Live 105's Not So Silent Night at Oracle Arena on Dec. 7, 2013, in Oakland, Calif. When a big foreign band announces a small run of U.S. shows, the Bay Area usually doesn't make the cut. But indie rock fans will be happy to learn that alt-J is coming to Oakland as one of their four U.S. appearances announced for 2023.
The band formed in 2007 while the members were attending the University of Leeds. They burst onto the indie rock landscape in 2012 with their debut album"An Awesome Wave," which earned the coveted Mercury Prize, an award given to the best album released by a British or Irish band. The award is typically an indicator of impending stardom, with winners including the XX, James Blake and Arctic Monkeys. The most recent winners were Little Simz in 2022 and Arlo Parks in 2021.
Alt-J have since released three LPs, including"The Dream" earlier this year, but the song"Breezeblocks" off"An Awesome Wave" is still their most popular song, clocking in over 650 million streams on Spotify. The tour this March is dubbed as the 10th anniversary of the album . The band plans to play the record in its entirety for the first time in the States. The tour begins in Brooklyn at the Kings Theatre on March 13, follows with two nights at The Wiltern in Los Angeles and closes at the Fox Theater in Oakland on March 23.
Presale tickets go on sale Dec. 7 at 10 a.m., with the official ticket release Dec. 9. Their last Bay Area show took place this year on April 1 at Bill Graham Theater alongside Portugal. The Man and Cherry Glazerr.
