James McAvoy's Cyrano de Bergerac co-stars 'racially abused' in Glasgow

McAvoy took the lead role in Cyrano de Bergerac in London, Glasgow and Brooklyn, New York

"The cast were amazing, it was brilliant," he said. "But I was really saddened, to be honest with you, because most of the women of colour in the cast got racially abused pretty much on a daily basis when we were there." Regarding the staging in Glasgow, McAvoy said: "I was going on stage every night going, I don't want us to be here. I brought this cast here and I don't want to be here."

The Cyrano de Bergerac production by the Jamie Lloyd company is a stripped back version of a 19th Century play reinvented many times - perhaps most memorably by Steve Martin in the film Roxanne. No props, no period costumes, no false nose . It's sad then to contrast that ecstatic welcome, with the verbal abuse cast members experienced in the city outside.

The guy's a Celtic supporting bimboy. I suspect that's what really upset him. Deserves what he gets in a deeply sectarian city.

So sad that young women visiting our beautiful country, have to suffer this. Thinks are improving, certainly where I stay, however. It is important that everyone takes ownership of this. And have the confidence to challenge/educate offenders wherever possible. Be cool freaks. Xx

Can’t believe the responses on here 🤦‍♂️ Racism exists folks, why are people taking it personally ? Case in point. My son’s Aunt and cousins are not white. I’ve seen the looks from people trying to work out how we can have kids of different race whilst out together - seriously !
