The 14-year-old British actor voices the titular character alongside Tom Hanks' Geppetto in the Robert Zemeckis film now streaming

Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, who stars as young Mark Critch in "Son of a Critch," recently voiced the role of Pinocchio alongside Tom Hanks' Gepetto in Disney's "Pinocchio," screening on Disney+.ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Like his character on “Son of a Critch,” 14-year-old British actor Benjamin Evan Ainsworth is what you might call an old soul.

“Ben Ainsworth couldn’t be better as Pinocchio,” Zemeckis says. “Ben walked on set and he was a pro. He was ready. He knew what he had to do. He came in and was always there to deliver. He’s a spectacular actor.”Benjamin’s roles in “Pinocchio” and “Son of a Critch” both involved speaking in an accent other than his own and required similar preparation.

“It was a strange scene about a funeral home,” Benjamin’s dad Timothy Ainsworth, a collaborator on the show, says. “We really started giggling. We read a few more sides around the table and we were giggling away as a family. We just loved it.”“The first time we came across the Newfoundland accent, we YouTubed it and there was some guy called Allan Hawco doing a video. That’s how we started learning it,” Ainsworth says, chuckling. To perfect the St.

“Son of a Critch,” which Critch created with “The Office” writer Tim McAuliffe, is based on Critch’s best-selling and award-winning memoirs of the same name and follows his life growing up as the self-described weirdest kid in school, trying awkwardly to fit in. Critch says he was looking for an old soul; a kid with range who could be naturally funny but also dramatic when required.

Season 2 of “Son of a Critch” — which stars Critch as his own father, VOCM reporter Mike Critch, along with Malcolm McDowell, Sophia Powers, Mark Rivera, Claire Rankin and Colton Gobbo — was filmed in St. John’s, St-Pierre and Ontario between July and October, with a brief pause to allow Benjamin to attend the “Pinocchio” premiere in Los Angeles in September.
