Nevertheless, he received the same puzzle-box invitation as the rest of the attendees, and the question of where it came from constitutes just the first of many mysteries in this intricately plotted tale.
Writer/director Rian Johnson had great fun in the original poking fun at the foibles of the rich and famous – the feckless offspring, bad manners and unseemly greed, for starters. This time, the stakes are higher and so is the wealth. Norton’s character is one of those moneyed types so prosperous he doesn’t even realize he’s well off.
He’s also a shameless name-dropper and fame-shopper, offering his guests samples of Jeremy Renner’s hot sauce and Jared Leto’s hard kombucha while letting it be known that his boat dock was designed by Banksy, his hourly gong composed by Philip Glass, and his own murder mystery party scripted by Gillian Flynn. Benoit of course solves it in no time flat, but then a real murder-mystery threatens everyone on the island.
