On the current chart of highest-grossing movies worldwide , Cameron’s original 2009 “Avatar” ranks at the top with $2.9 billion. Disney’s “Avengers: Endgame” is in second position with $2.7 million, while Cameron’s “Titanic” remains in the third slot with $2.1 billion. If “” wants to break even, it’ll need to overtake either “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” or “Avengers: Infinity War” in the fourth or fifth slots, respectively.
Regardless of what spot it claims, “Avatar: The Way of Water” will need to earn at least $2 billion to be profitable, according to Cameron. Only five movies have ever crossed the $2 billion mark, unadjusted for inflation. While the pandemic has affected moviegoing, films like “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and “Top Gun: Maverick” have managed to turn huge profits, so there’s hope for “The Way of Water.

When my husband was alive he watched Avatar at least 100 times. So I won't be running to watch it because frankly, I'm sick of it.
How much of this quoted number is strictly the cost of making the sequel rather than a future infrastructure investment for the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and g*d knows, 6th Avatar film.

It'll easily hit 2 Billion. Nostalgia's a great incentive in the first place, and mastery of thematic storytelling is another great incentive for it to do well. I saw the first Avatar movie 5-times in the theatre, this movie I plan on doing the same, (if not more!)

Don't think the average moviegoer understands that just because a film might make back what it's production budget cost, it won't automatically make back its money. Theaters get a cut, then there are back-end deals for actors and financiers usually.

This seems to take James Cameron’s quotes and blow it out of proportion. You mentioned in your own article reports estimated it at a $250 million budget. Even if it costs $350 million, the break even point would still be under $1 billion
