If you're not Black, the N-word is never OK to say. Not for 'art.' And certainly not for 'academics.'

Whenquestioned his use of the word in a creative writing course discussion just weeks ago, asking “Are we really having a conversation where you can use that word?” the visual arts professor didn’t pause to reflect on the moment. Instead, he doubled down in defense, saying the word ended with an “a” and not an “er.” Wrong Answer.

Let’s get this out of the way right off the bat — It’s not OK. It’s never OK. It’s not OK with an “a.” It’s not OK with an “er.” If you’re not Black, the N-word is just never OK to say. It really shouldn’t be that hard to understand and yet it is. ForIf you purchase a product or register for an account through one of the links on our site, we may receive compensation.
