The show has been a largely faithful and always gripping portrayal of the world-spanning story that Pullman created, with the third season mirroring the trilogy's final book, The Amber Spyglass. I could do with it being more, but one of the brilliant things about him, or one of the things that makes him so interesting, and such an asshole father, is his absence. The absent nature of his parenting defines him, so you can't really argue with that. You can't put him in too much. But I was really excited just to get going being that guy, and inhabit that weird megalomaniac and child killer every day.
And how about for Lord Asriel? What's it like to be the absent father who has to cope with the fact that his kid is very important? Ruth Wilson: That's been the best part of this. That's not often the case. If you've got a character that's over three or four or more seasons, often they become a bit repetitive; you're stuck in the same lane and patterns.
