Something that I think is so interesting about the film, and specifically these two performances at the center of it is you guys are able to say a lot without saying a lot, there's a lot of quietness to the movie. And what is that like to tackle as an actor. I mean, you've done huge Marvel projects, you've done theater, and now this small, intimate, independent film.
I think it's just about focusing and honing in on where that character is, what the environment is. It's one thing to do a film that's a speeding train and lots of explosions and blood and things like that. And then switching to an actual human connection between another person, the stillness of it, which I actually yearn for. I've done a lot of different genres. I've done comedy and all these different things, and I wanted to show another side of me.
It was just a piece of two people existing, and I really wanted that. I think that I needed that at the time, and I just wanted to show, I think we wanted to show honestly what an honest friendship and building of a friendship look like, what it's like to navigate grief and trauma. More often than not, most people don't have the words for that.
A project as intimate as this, where it's really a two-hander, at least. You guys are just in so many scenes, just the two of you together. Obviously, that has to rely a great deal on the script on the director, but also on a chemistry between the two actors. So I'm curious, did you and Jennifer Lawrence have to do a lot of work to build to that, or did it come naturally?
Both, actually, but for the most part, it was really what was happening in between takes that informed where these characters would go, because Jen is truly, she's been at this game way longer than I have. She is so powerful and so mesmerizing in her performances.
