“In every corner, Terminal A honors our history and our future,” Gov. Phil Murphy said during a ribbon cutting ceremony. “It’s hard not to walk in and say, ‘This is Newark Liberty? Yes this is Newark Liberty.’”
The terminal is projected to open Dec. 8 for passengers, said Kevin O’Toole, chairman of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. That ratio is flipped in new Terminal A, where the majority of restaurants and shops are located in the wings between security and the gates. A new six-floor structure next door — called the Conrac building — consolidates the locations of 10 airport rental car companies and includes three floors with 2,700 spaces of public parking.
There are many “wow” moments in the new terminal, starting with entering the building and seeing how large and airy it is. Travelers are greeted by grand spaces, wide aisles and ceilings high enough to suspend a two-story hanging sculpture. “The focus is on sense of place … Terminals can be generic, but we need connections to the community we’re in,” Lawrence said.
That starts at the curb where “dynamic” video signs direct passengers where to unload for their airline. Sidewalks are more than twice as wide as the ones at the old terminal. Large high resolution screens in the brand new Terminal A at Newark Liberty International Airport showcase New Jersey landmarks for viewing while passengers wait in line to get through security, all part of a $2.7 billion new project. There is also a Jersey-centric art show scrolling across a giant video screen across a wall over the TSA checkpoint for passengers to watch as they wait.
In addition to the expected favorites such as Starbucks, Zaro’s and Dunkin’ Donuts, local restaurants and shops from Newark and the region were given an opportunity to open in Terminal A through a small business outreach program. Locals might recognize restaurants from Jersey City and Newark among the shops.
One of the features they liked was large video signs that guide drivers and passengers where to load, where not to unload and where to wait for buses, taxis and ride share vehicles. Signs have been thought out, down to selecting letter fonts, size and colors that are easy to read, even by people with vision problems, officials said.
