Nickelback gets rollin' with first studio album in five years

“I love when those moments happen,” adds Peake. “You’ve got to be there for those moments. You can’t just expect the creativity to strike, but it’s nice when you are there to capture it.”Article content It is a testament to the partnership between Kroeger and Peake, who plays guitar and keyboards for Nickelback, that little sparks of creativity can still cause excitement after all these years. Peake has been playing with Kroeger since the 1990s when they co-founded a cover band with the unfortunate name Village Idiot back in their hometown of Hanna, Alberta.

Since then, the band has had multiple Grammy nominations, won 12 Junos, sold 50 million albums and earned the distinction of being second only to the Beatles as the best-selling foreign act in the United States. Still, it seems when the muse calls, both are willing to put everything else on hold. “When Tidal Wave just appeared out of nowhere and I called Ryan up, his enthusiasm for the song was immediate,” Kroeger says. “When he tells me he is coming over the next day to work on the song, that means he’s hearing something and I’m hearing something I’m excited about it. Then we jump in on a four-hour lyric session coming up with all these things that contribute to the main themes of the song.
