Don't get mad when the Buckeyes throw another bubble screen. Film Study shows why it was often still the right call in State College last weekend.

"It's always a great play if it works. If it doesn't work, it's just an awful play call. I've learned that over the years." - Ryan Day

But to assume that those superhuman efforts saved the Buckeyes from terrible play-calling would be a mistake. The consistent diet of wide receiver screens was the correct remedy for what Manny Diaz's defense brought to the table, often pressing bodies near the line of scrimmage to sell out against the run or pressure Stroud into a bad throw, leaving large swaths of open space on the edges.

Knowing Ohio State would largely rely on zone runs, the former head coach of the Miami Hurricanes consistently blitzed on early downs and slanted his linemen to blow up the blocking scheme. Despite its early struggles in the run game, the Buckeye offensive line did a good job of identifying pressure as the game wore on. While Penn State blitzed on 23% of his dropbacks, Stroud was only pressured on 8% of them, allowing him to identify holes in coverage and deliver accurate passes.

Stop sharing logic and truth. Fans don’t want to read crap like this.

Doesn’t matter if it doesn’t work don’t do it

Well u won’t be able to run on Michigan so I’d get used to it

If the bubble screen isn't effective then why not throw quick slant's & dink & donk to keep them honest. Run a 5 wide & blow the defense 🔙 or keep TH in & hit the quick out. Way 2 much talent & speed to look so basic. & The O-line be having less 🥞 then 🧇 🏠. Smh... Go Bucks!!!

So how is throwing a bubble screen and losing 5 yards better than taking a knee? Lmao

When you watched the guys fail to execute it, especially more than once, and continue to call it. Then it becomes play calling.

No

Idc what the film study said. My eyes told me the bubble screen wasn’t working but everything over the middle was.

Use one of the top 3 backs in the country coach Day. We know u wud like to throw on every down but not running henderson a MINIMUM Of 15 carries per game a poor game plan. Yes, i know he considers a short pass the same as a run. It’s not.

This is propaganda! One, every unsuccessful play call can be attributed to lack of execution. Two, Day had his ass handed to him against ichigan because they were more physical on the line of scrimmage. We are in the same position as last year against a physical line.

I will continue to scream obscenities at the tv every time it happens

Disagree, it's like the run\\option play. It's useless in our format

After reviewing this - I own all the crap I was screaming on forums and yelling at the tv emotionally lol. In day I trust

Meanwhile in Knoxville....

From what I recall when egbuka blocked they had positive gains

Did Ryan Day write this headline?

fixed game they will win by 3 TD's

CJ still carved em up when they opened things up! Man I can’t wait for the rest of this season!🌰🌰

Best defensive backfield in country is prolly what hurt those plays those most. DB’s and future starters in the league making league type plays on guys not used to making open field blocks on athletes like those.

It's used as set up, even if it doesn't work.

First half score? How many bubble screens? Points in 4th quarter? How many bubble screens? Sure they were the right calls. To keep the game close.

It's never the right call if you can't block properly.

It wasn’t that it was a bad call, the execution was bad.

The problem isn't that they called it. It's that 8t wasn't working, and they wouldn't stop calling it.

I was 100% confident coming into the year that we’d beat Michigan but I’ve seen a regression of our running game, which I didn’t think was possible, and our CB’s still don’t play the ball, PI’s galore. Add in uneven play calling and I’m like 50/50 now that OSU wins.

When you keeping failing over and over again, it is the wrong call

It’s not the right call if your team can’t execute it!

Play call can be good but if your players aren’t capable of executing it well then running it over and over is bad playcalling

Yep, horrible blocking on the plays. I saw a few that would’ve went for large plays if the WR/TE just make the block.

They were good calls but after a while when it’s clear it’s not working maybe you should pick a different play

I get it the bubble screen was a setup like a decoy but man……

Considering passing to Marvin harrison had like a 95 percent success rate I’m having a hard time seeing how film study wouldn’t show why they should have done that more instead

Menace2Sports CoachZachSmith stealing your material for clicks

Cue the couch potato coaches/athletes who got cut in 8th grade 😂😂😂😂😂😂

If your guys demonstrate multiple times that they can't block it, then maybe it's still the wrong call though.... You can see that the plays were there - but not getting executed. Call what best suits your players.

Coaches spend way too much time trying to balance run vs pass instead of going with the flow of the game. The play calling has been atrocious and a fall to the team up north should mean Day's job

The issue I have with Day as a play caller isn’t the plays per se, it’s his stubborn refusal to change when things aren’t working. Maybe the bubble screens were a good play call, but they didn’t work, so move on. He continually tries to force square pegs into round holes.

The play itself isn’t bad. We just executed bad. Consistently bad. Which is why it was the wrong call.

Cade stover block downfield challenge (impossible) (gone wrong)

Ryan Day is a fraud, tell me something I don't know

That's correct we did not get the blocks, execution will be a lot better this week. Go Bucks!!

They had no answer for Harrison....imagine if we'd have thrown to him 8 more times instead of 8 bubble screens that went nowhere lol

Stealing Menace2Sports film study

All they needed TWICE is for Cade Stover to block!

This team is built to be vertical, why give up your advantage

It’s ok if it’s executed correctly

And I'm mad again

It’s the right call if you can execute it. After the first two it was obvious we couldn’t.

Wrong call to keep doing something that consistently fails.

It's still the wrong call ...
