Those four artists were among the 22 that Sargeant and Bykovets chose as this year’s incubator fellows, roles they took over from artist and musician Jae Sterling and Contra, one half of the Calgary-born hip-hop duo Cartel Madras. Now in its fifth year, the development program emphasizes emerging artists who blend artistic forms and disciplines in their work.
“Lo-Fi Future is the sum of the past, present and future,” says Sargeant. “Every innovation that happened in the past has brought us to the present and what happens in the present will dictate the future. I feel like people who are creatives, they put what the future will be out there.’Article content
Different artists will be featured in upcoming shows, including Venus: Future Love , Earth: Mothership and Moon: Indigo Child . Nicaraguan-born photographer and social activist Wilmer Aburto, for instance, “is a legend,” Sargeant says “For me, it was about people who had already been putting in work and maybe just needed that extra push to get them to the next level through networking or whatever it may be. It was also people I could see potential based on the work they were doing. I could see their potential in the future and see their potential in what we were trying to create.
Not unlike former fellows Sterling and Contra – who founded the artist collective THOTNATION/SANSFUCCS – Sargeant X Comrade have always included community-building in their practice, whether it be as early regulars to Calgary’s Groove Theory free-form jams or as record-label founders.Article content
