Though she never says as much explicitly, it seems clear to me that Gurira is referring to her position in Hollywood as a dark-skinned Black woman, the type of actor who very rarely would get the chance to even appear in, let alone, a splashy Shakespeare production. The whole experience was something of a full-circle moment for Gurira. When applying to get into the masters program at NYU’s Tisch years ago, Gurira had to write a personal statement. She’s also found Black people in Hollywood to be incredibly collaborative. “Sometimes, you bump into folks and they’re like, ‘I want to show you this,’ or, ‘I want to work with you on that,’” she says. “It’s just an understanding that we’re [all] trying to bring our stories forth. There’s a shorthand with a lot of folks, and I think that’s a beautiful thing. There’s no trauma. It’s all just actual camaraderie and a quick mutual understanding of what we’re all trying to do out here.
“It is very much a passion of mine to see more Black voices, voices from my country, voices from around the [African] continent have a larger platform,” she continues, speaking specifically to the work done through Almasi. “And the only way to do that is to create opportunities and access.”
