Those are the 18 people who have died in San Diego County jails in the custody of the Sheriff’s Department this year. The department granted a 19th person a compassionate release hours before he died in a hospital, but did not release his name or include him in its official total. If it did — and it should — it would have a record number of deaths, one more than last year’s record 18, and it’s only October. In all, 222 people have died in jail since 2006.
