The film opens with the sounds of another age, the click and whirr of a video camera from a time when tapes and not flash drives were the medium of memory. Look closely into the screen and you’ll see a ghostly image of someone reflected in it, evidence that somewhere in our time, an adult version of Sophie is looking back on that golden summer.Article content
It’s a very particular moment in time. Sophie is on the cusp of adolescence but not yet enmeshed in its cogs, so she watches with an almost detached curiosity as kids just a few years older than her drink beer and make out. She also flips throughPaul is dealing with his own issues, through he keeps them hidden from his daughter. There’s a wistfulness about him, a loneliness, and we can’t help but notice that his holiday reading includes books on tai chi and meditation.
