Accepting the prize, Little Simz revealed: 'There were times in the studio where I didn't know if I was going to finish this record'

The London-born singer and rapper, 28, won out over a packed shortlist that included Harry Styles, Sam Fender, Self Esteem and Nova Twins.that she claimed in February, in addition to the Ivor Novello Award and NME Award she picked up this year.

Judge and Radio 1 Xtra DJ Jamz Supernova announced the winner, hailing the “truly exceptional” album’s tackling of themes “both personal and political, with music as sophisticated as it is varied” The prestigious Mercury Prize, decided by a judging panel of music experts, is awarded to the best album released by a British or Irish artist.

Accepting the prize, Little Simz revealed: “There were times in the studio where I didn’t know if I was going to finish this record, I was feeling all the emotions and really going through it.” She thanked producer Inflo, adding: “He’s known me since I was so young, he’s stuck by me and we created this album together… he stuck by me and pushed me to deliver this album for you guys.”The artist told the crowd: “I’m very overwhelmed, I’m very grateful, glory to God… thank you so much to my family, my loved ones.
