Iranian authorities use plainclothes officers, digital surveillance and drones to target protesters

Iranian climber Elnaz Rekabi appeared at a competition in South Korea Sunday without covering her hair, as protests over women's rights continued in Iran. Two days later, authorities said she was returning to her country and concerns grew over her safety.

The techniques are a response to protesters’ adaptations in an uprising that began after 22-year-old Mahsa Amini’s Sept. 16over alleged violations of the country’s dress code. Security forces have used live ammunition and tear gas to disperse large crowds, leaving hundreds dead and injured.
