Boland is everywhere in the movie. In addition to this being her feature directing debut, she produced the film and adapted the screenplay from the novel by Amy Jones. And she stars as Nicki and Finn Parker, twin sisters from Thunder Bay who long ago took very different paths. Finn moved to Toronto while Nicki stayed home, had a child, and helped look after their mentally ill mother , together with younger sister Paris .
Finn then reluctantly reunites with several characters from her past, following the trope that when a prodigal child comes home she will find everyone in pretty much the same state in which she left them. Usually that means at a bar.Article content Boland does a great job in front of and behind the camera, particularly in her dual role as the twins. I spent a good portion of the film thinking the second actor looked an awful lot like Boland, before realizing it was in fact her in different hair and makeup.
Where the film founders a little is in its pacing and the depth of its characters. With three strong-willed sisters, plus a troubled mother and at least two male love interests, there just isn’t enough screen time to fully explore everyone’s story. I often harp on movies for running too long, but at 87 minutes,We’re All in This Together opens Oct. 14 in Toronto and Vancouver.
