South Korea's military appears to want to conscript members of the K-pop group BTS for mandatory military duties, as the public remains sharply divided over whether they should be given exemptions.

The Associated PressWhether the band's seven members must serve in the army is one of the hottest issues in South Korea because its oldest member, Jin, faces possible enlistment early next year after turning 30 in December.Lee Ki Sik, commissioner of the Military Manpower Administration, told lawmakers on Friday that it's "desirable" for BTS members to fulfill their military duties to ensure fairness in the country's military service.

Under South Korean law, all able-bodied men are required to perform 18-21 months of military service. But the law provides special exemptions for athletes, classical and traditional musicians, and ballet and other dancers who have won top prizes in certain competitions that enhance national prestige.

Since the draft forces young men to suspend their professional careers or studies, the dodging of military duties or creation of exemptions is a highly sensitive issue.Jimin, J-Hope, Jin, RM, Jungkook, Suga, and V of BTS perform onstage during the 64th Annual GRAMMY Awards at MGM Grand Garden Arena on April 3, 2022 in Las Vegas.

Several amendments of the conscription law that would pave the way for BTS members to be exempted have been introduced in the National Assembly, but haven't been voted on with lawmakers sharply divided on the matter.

They should be exempted. They have done more for SK than any other group or individuals. It's elitism as only classical musicians & Olympic athletes are exempt. KPop is as culturally important.

Probably a good thing to conscript. Make men out of them.

What the hell is BTS 🤣

Some of the BTS members have already commented about serving mandatory military duties and did not object to it. Pretty certain South Korea will assign them to military duties where they will not be put in risk.

RIP BTS

'Mandatory' its pretty clear

K pop is absolute garbage. Fight me.

Good

Please!!!

I can't think of any reason why they would be given an exemption. Rich people still need to do jury duty. I don't know why this would even be a question debated there.

I know 2 guys that left Korea for university in the west and never went back because of the mandatory military service.

There should be NO EXEMPTIONS for anyone.

I served in the military for 12 years. These men are so fragile and vain. They would NEVER make it in the military. I say that as a girl. Military service can be done by anyone who is tough enough, and most women are tough.

If Elvis can do it so can these guys.

What will they do peel potatoes

They'd be awesome at drill.

Just because you can sing shouldn't give you special treatment when the rest of the country has to do it.

If Korea doesn’t do it, Russia might want them.

not

Fingers crossed it happens and the rocket man finally sends 1 south 🙌

LOL
