“I didn’t have a huge number of policies that I ran on. I ran, of course, on pushing back against Ottawa and making sure that we assert our constitutional rights. I also ran on changing the Human Rights Code to make medical choice a protected area so that people can’t be discriminated against or fired on the basis of their vaccine choice as well as reforming Alberta Health Services,” said Smith.
Travis Toews, the campaign’s runner-up, previously said that Smith’s planned Sovereignty Act would be disastrous for Alberta’s economy and would drive investors away. On Friday, he backtracked on those comments slightly, saying he agrees with the objectives of the act in gaining more autonomy for Alberta. However, he said he still opposes the act as it has previously been outlined.Article content
Speaking for the first time Friday after his defeat, Toews said he remains committed to the UCP but would not say if he plans to run again in next year’s general election. He declined to comment if he wanted a cabinet position under Smith, simply stating that those decisions are up to the premier-designate.
“A handful of UCP members have announced that they are not running again. Does that trickle turn into a flood?” said Bratt. “Let’s wait and see.”
That should last for a good day, or two.
