To cope with the boredom of jail, Damien Linnane taught himself to draw portraits from cosmetic ads in magazines that circulated through the prison cells.

Over the three decades the gallery has had a $100,000 turnover, and turned around the public perception of prison art, as well as prisoners’ lives said co-curator Damian Moss.“Most of our artists aren’t artistic at first but when they complete and then sell their first piece of art it is a watershed moment,” said Moss.

“Aboriginal art is by far the most popular among visitors to the gallery, which benefits Aboriginal inmates as a way of connecting with their culture,” said Grant, a former numeracy teacher at Long Bay who helped launch the gallery in 1992.
