Review: Spellbinding solo show lays bare a marriage and a wife's guilt yycarts

Back in 2020, Flacks promised Blake Brooker, One Yellow Rabbit’s artistic director, that he could have the world premiere of her new solo show at the 2022 High Performance Rodeo. When that Rodeo was cancelled, Brooker invited Flacks to premiere her new work at the 2023 Rodeo, but Flacks had already committed to starring in a four-city tour of Fall On Your Knees, a stage version of Ann-Marie MacDonald’s 1996 novel.

Flacks maintains guilt is wired into her DNA because she is Jewish. In a hilarious phone call routine, she channels her grandmother to show how guilt is not just embraced but passed down through generations. One of Flacks’ more painful recollections happened on a birthday during the early stages of the divorce. It was a tradition to wake a family member on his or her birthday with cake, songs and presents in their room. She makes us experience the emptiness she felt when that didn’t happen for her and that ability to create emotions in her audience is one of many remarkable achievements in Guilt.
