Janelle Monáe is ready to talk… about a film, and a role, that they can’t really talk about. “Do I love this movie? F—k, yes. Do I fuck with my character hard? F—k, yes.”

That release, Monáe says, involved shattering some glass. You can glimpse the scene, for a split second, in theteaser trailer Netflix dropped before the TIFF launch. We start talking about it, and Monáe describes a specific detail before pausing: “You can’t really say that, right? That’ll be giving away a lot.” Stricken from the record. Monáe cried while filming the scene, and she cried again while watching it during her first screening ofBut that doesn’t mean that the sequence is especially heartbreaking. “I think it was me looking at all the hard work that I had done,” she says. “I was really proud of myself. I worked my ass off. We were in 105-, 110-degree temperatures outside, shooting with our own lights and the light from the sun…. I finally released. I finally had that moment.

for TIFF’s coveted people’s choice award. Monáe hears the noise, but she isn’t taking it too seriously, at least for now. “I don’t do what I do for awards—I know that’s a political game,” she says. She clarifies she believes in the work and the project: “Do I love this movie? Fuck, yes. Do I fuck with my character hard? Fuck, yes.”
