Carriageworks pleas with NSW to prioritise art over apartments | LindaMorrissmh

On one hand, Transport for NSW is seeking to rezone and redevelop 10 hectares of railway land south of Redfern station for up to 450 new apartments and tech office spaces in blocks between three and 28 storeys high.

Rather than more mixed-use high rise, the leading arts space says planners should look to the Wynyard Quarter Innovation Precinct in Auckland, Digbeth in Birmingham and Kings Cross Central in London for inspiration. Planning Minister Anthony Roberts will alone decide the fate of these competing visions. Transport for NSW is formulating its response as the release of public submissions that were expected to go online weeks ago.Transport for NSW’s current plans, however, partition a precinct that should be unified. The distance between Carriageworks’ main building in South Eveleigh and the Paint Shop of North Eveleigh is the walk from many people’s front door to their gate.

LindaMorrissmh This land should go back to rail use eg. stabling for intercity trains as part of strategy to replace flights. cityofsydney We know the NSW government has nothing else in their head than to turn every m2 into apartment tower concrete. So naïve. Proud Rlwy engineers & staff gone

LindaMorrissmh If the government don’t have money to renovate Leichhardt Oval, they don’t have money to spend on elitist so-called art
