On July 31, the Shared Spaces Program ended its Valencia Street schedule according to the. But since then, Manny Yekutiel, an SFMTA Board of Directors member and owner of Manny’s restaurant/community gathering space, has been working hard to get the outdoor event back on track.
“I was tasked with figuring out if we could find a compromise between the SFMTA, the fire department, and the Valencia merchants to get the street closure,” Yekutiel told SFGATE. “I give a lot of credit to our city departments for letting us do it. It has been challenging but worth it.” Yekutiel added that with the help of Fire Marshal Ken Cofflin, a car-free portion of Valencia Street will effectively resume every Friday and Saturday moving forward.
Luke Bornheimer, an organizer at Community Spaces SF, told SFGATE that the restoration of Valencia Shared Spaces will help foster a vibrant and connected San Francisco. Moreover, Bornheimer thinks that the Shared Spaces program has proven to support local retail shops as well as bars and restaurants throughout the Mission District.
“This is an activation of the space that people love,” Bornheimer told SFGATE. “It’s great to see it coming back.”
