If the watchdog does opt to tear up or suspend the licence, it can appoint a manager to oversee the casino’s operations under the Casino Control Act if it finds it is in the public interest to keep its doors open. It can also instead decide to amend Star’s licence, provided it gives Star 14 minutes’ notice of the proposed amendments.
Swinburne University governance expert Helen Bird said the appointment of Mr Hogg shows they’re “continuing to take a very legalistic approach to problems” rather than demonstrating they are committed to overhauling the culture of the business. Mr Crawford said on Wednesday he also stood by previous comments suggesting Mr Hogg should be shown the door.
Mr Bell listed Mr Hogg, interim chief financial officer Christina Katsibouba, chief operations officer Damian Quayle, company secretary Jennie Yuen, chief transformation officer Kim Lee, chief marketing officer George Hughes and external affairs boss Peter Jenkins as “the remaining individual close contacts of Star” who have not been vetted for suitability.
Ms Bird said she believed ASIC should investigate Mr Bekier’s conduct as a “critical figure” as the point of call between the board and management. She said there are serious questions about him “failing to report to the board adequately” and “dismissing concerns that were raised in front of the board”.
