TheWomanKing proves once again that Viola Davis can do just about anything—including slice you to pieces—in Gina Prince-Bythewood's latest action film. Our TIFF22 review:

In the opening scene of Gina Prince-Bythewood's The Woman King, we see an imposing figure emerge from the tall grass in the moments before she will lead an attack. The figure is General Nanisca and soon the rest of her all-female group of warriors, the Agojie, will rise in kind behind her. Standing opposite them is a small encampment of men that are responsible for a recent mass kidnapping.

The film, while boasting many solidly constructed action setpieces, is also a coming-of-age character study of sorts. Following the opening, the story slows down and takes its time in developing all the rich details of its world. Beyond Nawi and Nanisca, who begin to form a bond the more the two learn about each other, there are a whole host of other compelling characters that all shine. There is John Boyega’s King Ghezo who oversees the Agojie and the people they protect.

I guess killing people is okay when it is black on black hate. Not a lot of diversity here. You couldn't have shoe horned a latino or asian into this Tribe? Or a white person? Representation matters and white people are like 60% of America. They're fictional characters. If you have a problem with making them white, then you're a racist. Slave trade
