‘Really, that’s a job?’: Only 4 wildlife biologists work at airports nationwide. One is in San Antonio
Parker-Nowicki follows a long tradition of executive directors, including Jo Long and Yonnie Blanchette, who have navigated the center through challenging times. COVID proved to be an eye-opening time for Parker-Nowicki and her staff, challenging and liberating at the same time. They stepped out on faith, trying new ideas, such as virtual presentations and planning a mobile arts lab to roll out across the city.Parker-Nowicki said the Carver offered performances over the years — such as contemporary dance, Russian opera and Tibetan monks — not often seen before or at all in San Antonio.
Parker-Nowicki’s introduction to the Carver came when she was a freshman at Lee High School. She was a student in teacher Tammy Frazier’s first theater class for a play that fed her longing to act. Her family supported her desire to study theater at Southwestern University, where she learned other facets of theater, such as design, directing, box office operations and costumes.
