Brendan Fraser transformed into a morbidly obese man for 'The Whale' and became a frontrunner for an Oscar despite grumblings about whether an obese person should have been cast instead

The movie is the latest from US director Darren Aronofsky, who won the top prize in Venice in 2008 for"The Wrestler" and is known for dark indie films such as"Black Swan" and"Requiem for a Dream".

Filed away in Hollywood's romcom archives, Brendan Fraser returns to screen, transformed into a morbidly obese man for "The Whale" which premiered at the Venice Film Festival. The comeback role made him an instant frontrunner for an Oscar. But his return as Charlie, a 250-kilo English professor trying to reconnect with his daughter, has drawn instant acclaim. As the credits rolled in the Sala Grande theatre, the audience gave the film a long-standing ovation while Fraser, on the balcony alongside his director and co-stars, wiped tears away.

"I developed muscles I didn't know I had. I even felt a sense of vertigo at the end of the day when all the appliances were removed, as you do stepping off the boat here in Venice."

I'd love someone to name one obese actor who has the talent and work ethic and deserves the role and more than Brendan Fraser

Isn’t this whole thing getting out of hand?

Inside Brendan Fraser’s ‘The Whale’ Transformation: “I Wanted to Disappear”In their first interviews about ‘The Whale,’ Fraser and director Darren Aronofsky talk their incredibly elaborate, sensitive work on this film, about a reclusive English teacher on the verge of death. It broke my heart 💔 We can cheer for a Brendan Fraser comeback while simultaneously acknowledging how harmful his new film is. I understand blindspots, but once the problem has been highlighted for you, ignoring the harm being done by The Whale because you want one actor to succeed is pathetic. Too bad the film fell apart about half way thru.

‘The Whale’ Review: Brendan Fraser is Sly and Moving as a Morbidly Obese Man, But Darren Aronofsky’s Film Is Hampered by Its ContrivancesIn TheWhale, directed by Darren Aronofsky (who shepherded Mickey Rourke’s return in “The Wrestler”), Brendan Fraser is a better actor — slyer, subtler, more haunting — than he has ever been. Wait, you mean better than Encino Man? Also put some MF respect on his NAME he definitely stole and should have a “Oscar” for Dead Poet Society! BrendanFraser I wonder if you could have thrown a few more callous and offensive frames into this article.
