The “challenges” for this instalment, which saw the celebrities stationed in the Jordanian desert, included, you know, exposure to CS gas and being forced into hand-to-hand combat with one another . Some of the celebrities struggled – though you would, wouldn’t you, being locked in a room full of tear gas? – and Gill and Wicks were singled out for their difficulties with the process early on. Others, particularly Whitbread, who was praised by the trainers for her stoic endurance, thrived.
As the celebrities were introduced to their surroundings and new lives via a bizarre initiation tactic whereby they had to get themselves wet from head to toe and then roll around in the sand, the trainers went hard on the artifice of celebrity, which the gruelling process apparently attempts to challenge. “Celebrities live in a world of fake,” said directing staff member and former SAS officer Billingham. “They are in for a big shock.
Of course, Billingham’s sentiment is correct to a degree, but this is a TV show, so there is inevitably a level of “fake” here, too. While this is probably the toughest celebrity competition show on TV, it is ultimately a reality programme, and so on a couple of occasions, celebrities were chosen to come and open up to the staff about their life experiences, and how it had informed their behaviour during the challenges.
