National Cinema Day offers $3 movie tickets in San Jose, Oakland, San Francisco, Walnut Creek, Berkeley and other Bay Area cities.

Going to the movies can be pricey.On that day, tickets — at least in most cinemas across the country — will be just $3.

Yes, that includes all formats — whether we’re talking 3-D, digital, IMAX, Dolby, Prime , etc. They are all $3 — all day long.The special prices happen as theaters and movie-goers celebrate National Cinema Day, a nationwide discount day that takes place at more than 3,000 theaters and on more than 30,000 screens. It comes courtesy of the Cinema Foundation, which is the non-profit arm of the National Association of Theater Owners.

The chosen date — Sept. 3 — occurs over Labor Day weekend, which is reportedly one of the slowest weekends for movie theaters each year. The biggie chains — like AMC, Regal and Cinemark — are participating, as well as many independent and local operators.and scroll down to the “Find Cinemas” box where you can enter your city or zip code.

That’s exactly what we did and immediately up popped 20 movie theaters in a 23-mile radius from our location.
