Patrick Delany’s comment at Sydney premiere of Game of Thrones prequel were intended to be ‘self-deprecating and lighthearted’, spokesperson says

“On behalf of Mr Delany, the Foxtel Group apologises if his remarks were misunderstood and caused any offence,” the spokesperson told Crikey, who broke the story.

Delany’s comments were meant to be “self-deprecating and lighthearted”, the apology continued, intending to convey the idea that Game of Thrones had taken a hitherto unknown actor and thrown her into the international spotlight. “Emilia Clarke went from relatively unknown to one of the most recognised and most-loved actors in television and film,” the spokesperson said.

The 35-year-old British actor, who does not feature in the prequel and was not present at the Sydney premiere, is scheduled to appear in the Marvel television series Secret Invasion, which is now in post-production. The Guardian understands the comments were met by awkward laughter. One person at the premiere told Crikey: “It felt like he was expecting us to laugh along, but people in the room were obviously shocked by it.”Game of Thrones has gone down in history as the most-watched television drama of all time. Its final episode, although widely panned by critics and greeted with disappointment by many of its millions of fans, attracted 1.

She's beautiful

Should not have stated it in the first case, what a GRUB.

Dumpy is an entirely appropriate adjective for someone of her body type - always a strange casting choice

'self' deprecating...

What an odd thing to say without irony. My first thought was he was being ironic as Ms Clarke has topped ‘sexiest woman in the world’ lists.

Both are irrelevant to me. Foxtel is garbage and ..never mind.

Why would you care?

It’s only “self-deprecating” if the joke is about the person telling it. Otherwise it is simply an insult.

If she's not a ‘dumpy-looking girl’, then what is she?

He should resign

Err no that's a snake apology. It's saying he's sorry you got confused + were offended as a result. Foxtel - cluelessly toxic from the top down

Just another misogynist at MurdochGutterMedia

How can it be self deprecation when you're making the comment about someone else? 🤔

Wouldn't expect less from a Murdoch CEO.

He’s not wrong
