Kelly McMichael has been an active contributor to the St. John's indie music scene for a number of years. — SaltWire Network file photo - Andrew Waterman/The TelegramTo begin with, it was somewhat surreal for Kelly McMichael to see her name sharing space on a longlist for the Polaris Music Prize alongside Canadian heavyweights.
When the shortlist for Canada's richest music prize was announced July 14, neither Arcade Fire or The Weeknd made the cut. But McMichael did, earning the honour for her self-released 2021 solo debut"Waves." She is one of 10 bands and recording artists up for the $50,000 prize. The remaining shortlisted artists will receive $3,000.
"I would say that I went into shock," McMichael said when asked about her initial reaction to being shortlisted for the award."My blood kind of went out of my body. It felt like I was going to faint and I was shaking."She has been active in the St. John's music scene for almost a decade, playing in bands like Renders, Rouge and Thelma and Louise.
While she appreciates the profile boost from being named to the Polaris shortlist, McMichael remains pragmatic about how difficult it is to make a living as a musician. But she's also hopeful about her future.
