Organisers of the Byron Bay music festival underplayed the reality of the situation as rain and transport woes created a perfect storm that left punters shell-shocked

of this year’s Splendour in the Grass festival, the event’s latest Twitter update read: “You won’t see any disposable cups at Splendour bars.”

We were staying in an AirBnB, and as we headed down to catch a bus to the venue the next morning, news filtered out that day one of the festival had been cancelled – despite assurances hours earlier that it would go ahead “rain, hail or shine”. The poor campers who braved a night of water sports on site were appeased with a few DJ tents throbbing repetitive beats into their sleep-derived brains.

Underplaying the reality of the situation was a constant theme that seemed deceptive at best, and bordered on dangerous. The festival had been cancelled for the previous two years and, as the weekend drew closer, it weathered major last-minute lineup changes and The party line was that there was a completely unforeseeable one-in-50-year weather event. Hah, older generations would look back fondly at this as a profound “lived experience” but the current crop just look for someone to blame for their mild inconvenience and lack of sunny instaworthy documentation FirstWorldProblems

I really feel sorry for the organisers. They didn’t cause this.

I think this is a bit over the top not saying there weren't problems, I personally still had a great time. Not coming back for day 3 was a mistake the Tyler set was amazing.

joshgnosis Finally, it’s becoming a real music festival. As a 90’s UK festival veteran, that’s all part of the 'fun’. The trick is to turn up a day or two early, ideally thanks to a friend with access, and get settled in. (Minus the pandemic, of course.)
