Editorial | Show Ellis and Banyana the money

The national women’s soccer team have put up a valiant fight at the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. The inspirational team made us proud by reaching the final after beating Zambia in the semifinal. By securing a place in the semis in Morocco, South Africa booked their place at next year’s Fifa World Cup – their second successive one – to be hosted by New Zealand and Australia.

The cherry on top was the crowning of Desiree Ellis as Africa’s coach of the year – for the third time – at the CAF awards on Thursday. For a number of years now, the women’s national soccer team has been our only source of pride and joy as Bafana Bafana have continued their dismal degeneration. Banyana’s consistently good performances continue to give our nation a sense of unity and pride, but it is not good enough to simply congratulate Ellis and her charges for their sterling work. Safa president Danny Jordaan must stop paying lip service to the team and speed up the transformation process by resolving the pay parity issue for our national teams.

Banyana’s excellent run – which includes qualifying for the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games, playing in their first World Cup in 2019, and winning seven of nine Cosafa Cups – is more than enough to convince the soccer bosses they deserve decent pay. Banyana shouldn’t have to rely only on corporate sponsors, but also on Safa’s willingness to commit to fair and equal pay for all.In times of uncertainty you need journalism you can trust.
