”) makes a fascinating observation regarding Newman’s performance in “Hud”: he deems it of immense historical significance, as the forebear of all subsequent Hollywood antiheroes. Hawke manages to keep the informational proceedings lively, and, even while using clips from Newman’s and Woodward’s films as visual backdrops to biographical discussions, he displays a discerning eye for moments that spotlight the actors’ artistry and personae.
The struggle that actors face in their desire for roles—in competing for them or in deciding to take a role in order to insure the production of a particular film—unavoidably involves studio politics and financing. Newman proved to be a brilliant businessman, a manager of his own career in choosing roles that burnished his reputation while also crafting a personal brand.
Newman attributed his development as an actor to the Actors Studio—and Hawke, exploring that training, elicits from Vincent D’Onofrio a remarkable demonstration ofin a single Zoom shot, a brief, improvised scene in which D’Onofrio, tapping into his own well of experience, pulls wrenching sobs from himself. The love of show, the love of artifice, the joy in performing, the delight in gesture for its own sake—all gone with the Method.
i enjoyed this more than i thought i would.
Johnny Depp is pretty good.
Loved this doco.
His book was a hard read. You have a picture of a man and then he goes and smashes it to smithereens. All of us humans are scarred one way or the other. Even the most handsomest, famous movie stars with eyes to die for.
Extraordinary documentary.
I’m sure they will be negative comments about this, there’s always miserable, hateful people. But I’ve always been a fan because Newman started those camps for children and donated all the profits from his food company to charity. Imagine if everyone were like this?
This documentary is wonderful. With each episode our fascination grows not only for these 2 beautiful, talented, imperfect people who loved each other for better or worse, but also for the extraordinary period of history in which they worked & rose to acclaim. TheLastMovieStars
Movie stars have 'a purpose'? Could have fooled me. Their only purpose is to make money for themselves.
Great story. Can't wait to see the doco.
Just started, but pretty good.
