Calgary Folk Music Festival picks for Saturday, Sunday calgaryfolkfest yyc FolkFest

That includes the festival’s famous workshops/sessions, where four or five artists are plucked from the lineup and teamed up for an hour or so of impromptu collaboration. What usually results is a tasty mix of vibes, from sublime and poignant song swaps to fearfully loud and cheerfully chaotic groove-heavy free-for-alls.

Both Kinds will feature Calgary country band The Hello Darlins, Edmonton’s emerging country artist D’orjay the Singing Shaman, Georgia’s veteran renaissance-man eccentric Jim White and Crossfield’s cowboy crooner Robert Adam. It will be on Stage 2 at 11:25 a.m. Saturday also boasts a stellar lineup on the main stage, ending with Austin, Tex.’s indie-rock gods Spoon. It will also feature Montreal’s Allison Russell, who is riding a wave of acclaim for her debut solo album Outside Child. Russell, who is now based in Nashville, is already a local favourite thanks to that stunning, festival-stealing 2017 performance by Birds of Chicago, her duo with husband JT Nero.

The Canadian singer will be at the 2022 folk festival, where she will perform solo.A festival favourite has always been those Sunday morning sessions that carry a bit of a church-y vibe. You don’t have to be particularly spiritual, however, to enjoy these hangover-curing sermons, which can occasionally erupt into full-blown revival-tent celebrations. Hymns and Hers will take place at 10:30 a.m.

In previous years, Sunday’s headliner spot on the main stage has often been reserved for mellower, baby boomer-approved acts that allow exhausted audiences to bob their heads approvingly as the festival draws to a close. But this year, Sunday night will be closed by some major star power. Australia’s Courtney Barnett has been earning voice-of-her-generation accolades from starry-eyed critics ever since her 2015 breakthrough Sometimes I Sit and Think, And Sometimes I Just Sit.
