It’s the eighth hearing since early June, and the second to take place in the evening hours since the select committee made its prime-time debut seven weeks ago — a sign that members want maximum exposure for what some observers are calling a “season finale.”
McEnany, asked whether Trump ever left the dining room to go to the Oval Office or the Situation Room, replied, “Not to my recollection — he was always in the dining room.” The disruption proved temporary: by 4 a.m. the next morning, those same members of Congress had reconvened with former vice-president Mike Pence to finish the job of counting the electoral votes and officially certifying President Joe Biden’s election win.
The hearings, staged with the help of former ABC News president James Goldston, have so far proven to be an unlikely summer blockbuster for the committee. They listened to former White House counsel Pat Cipollone, who suggested Pence be nominated for the Presidential Medal of Honor for his bravery, describe a chaotic meeting of Trump’s fringe advisers the night before, desperate for a way to keep the president in power.
