After Mardudhunera women marched in the streets of Perth, they hand-delivered an appeal to stop a controversial gas project which threatens ancient Murujuga rock art, to the WA Environmental Protection Authority. Via NITV

The federal government has intervened to halt work on the controversial urea fertiliser plant proposed at Murujuga, in Western Australia's Pilbara region.

The applications, that fall under the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Heritage Protection Act , would provide a 60-day moratorium on project construction and an assessment into the cultural heritage impacts of the proposed project.“We are relieved that Federal Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek has intervened to order a temporary pause on works on the Perdaman Fertiliser Plant to consider our appeals,” said Ms Alec.

“We know that our knowledge is connected to deep time and we do not accept that the short-term interests of fossil fuel companies are more important than the land and the people who hold this ancient wisdom. “There is nothing uncertain and nothing acceptable about what is happening to our cultural heritage. We have personally witnessed the disintegration and fading of the rock art.

The pair lobbied the federal government after WA minister for environment Reece Whitby approved the gas project.

Opponents of $4.5bn fertiliser plant 'hopeful' as build goes on holdTraditional owners who have been fighting an industrial development near ancient rock art in WA's north say a pause to construction has given them hope. Ancient rock art 🤣🤣🤣 It does resemble Led Zeppelin throwing paint while high on acid. I would encourage anyone with a bulldozer to go there & convert it to dust. Unbelievable Worldwide fertiliser and food shortages are here. We want to stop a major fertiliser manufacturer building a 4.5 billion $ plant, and we want to stop it over some rock art? Move the rock art. If Australia cannot do this we are doomed to become a third world nation Lucky they don’t have Rio Tinto involved; they would have just blasted them, as they did with Juukan Gorge. Environmental and cultural vandals in the manner of ISIS in Syria. I guess they had their overseas shareholders to consider, for whom they rip every cent they can out of Oz
