Co-creator Jon Hurwitz says the Cobra Kai season 5 finale is absolutely wild. Cobra Kai season 4 stuck with the show’s winning formula mixing Karate Kid nostalgia with generational storytelling and of course a healthy dose of karate action. The result was a season that currently holds a 95% critics score and 91% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Besides scoring highly with critics and fans alike, Cobra Kai season 4 also left the show with a lot of issues to resolve in season 5. The biggest cliffhanger of course was the arrest of Kreese after he was framed by Terry Silver for assaulting Stingray, leaving Silver in charge of an expanding Cobra Kai. The season 4 finale also saw Miguel suddenly leaving for Mexico City to search for his biological father.
It’s of course bold to call Cobra Kai season 5’s finale wild given how crazy some of the show’s prior season finales turned out to be. Season 2 actually set the trend of really dramatic finales with the infamous high school karate rumble that ended in Miguel falling from a balcony and badly injuring his back.
It will indeed be difficult for Cobra Kai season 5’s finale to top previous season finales for action and drama. But at least according to Hurwitz, it seems the show has pulled it off by being “absolutely wild” and “unlike” any of the previous efforts. And Hurwitz’s use of the word “unpredictable” to tease the whole season certainly indicates that things will develop in unexpected ways throughout the upcoming new 10-episode run. Cobra Kai season 5 arrives on Netflix on September 9, 2022.
