After over a decade of living on the small screen, the Belcher family finally got their theatrical due with The Bob's Burgers Movie. The film sees the Belchers' summer plans ruined when a giant sinkhole opens in front of their restaurant, preventing customers from getting in and putting them at risk of losing the restaurant to the bank.
I just happened to be around and they were like,"We need some violins, just like little thing" and one thing led to another, fast forward seven years ago, now, and I've recorded on dozens and dozens of film scores. So through that relationship with Chris, I actually met his orchestrator, Tim Davies, who ended up becoming a great friend and ended up writing the score to Bob's Burgers.
So on a movie recording, that is definitely the conductor in most cases, but it's also the people behind the booth. It's the composer who's sitting behind the booth, giving notes on what they want the music to sound like, it's the engineer, it's the individual running the track into our headphones so we have the right mix in the balance so that the orchestra seats together.
What's interesting about my experience, though, is that I have a lot of experience as a composer for film music as well. I've worked for a bunch of composers in town, Chris Beck being one of them, Junkie XL aka Tom Holkenberg, who did the music for Mad Max and Batman v. Superman. I worked for him for an extended amount of time and then I worked at Hans Zimmer's Remote Control facility and his Bleeding Fingers commercial music company, writing music for them.
Maxwell Karmazyn: Well, the workflow changed a lot during COVID, as far as recording film scores goes. One, we're all in masks, which was different, I didn't know how to feel about sitting in a session for 8-10 hours a day wearing a mask, but you do get used to that. The biggest challenge is the fact that the orchestra had to be spread out because you had COVID guidelines.
I know you just mentioned how it felt seeing the final cut of the film, but how did it feel seeing the overwhelmingly positive responses from both critics and audiences once The Bob's Burgers Movie did finally get to the big screen? I remember, even as a fan, there was always a concern of it taking so long and wondering if it'd be worth the wait and it certainly was. There's so many amazing musical sequences in the film, be it general score or specific musical numbers, did you have any particular number or sequence that you liked working on the most?
