Montclair musician Joe Frankel bought the neighborhood deli in January of 2019, and after surviving the pandemic, has been on a mission to make it a neighborhood gathering place. “This is not a place to be anonymous,” he says. “It’s a place to be seen and catch up with people.” To that end, he’s putting both Taps and Takeout and the neighboring wine bar Duvin – which he’s also acquired – on the map with live music every couple of weeks.

Frankel’s last plaza party on June 26 had a small festival feel. The Grateful Dead cover band, Alchemy Trailblazer, played while children romped and adults sat in lawn chairs sipping libations. Frankel’s chef, Ruben Ramos, ramped up the kitchen and fed the masses as Frankel manned the bar. And for those few hours, the joy was palpable. Neighbors came together and the world seemed suddenly carefree.

Trading Spaces: Montclair’s unique home goods shop, Pelago, is moving into the space that was formerly Someone’s in the Kitchen in Montclair. Owners Theresa Henrekin and Bill Williams have been steadily growing their business since they opened at 6134 Medau Place in 1992 – and the stars aligned when their lease expired in June and the space opened up at 6128 La Salle Avenue.
